A good night's rest is important
to your health, both physically and psychologically. Waking
up after a restful night's sleep, you are better prepared for
the challenges of the day. Good sleep habits and a comfortable
environment play an important role in how well you rest. Distractions
such as noise, light, and even an uncomfortable or worn-out
mattress can contribute to a lack of sleep. It is important
to realize the value of sleep and the factors that can affect
your health. |
Mattress and Foundation
It should be obvious that your mattress needs to be comfortable
for you to sleep well. The old myth that a firm mattress is necessary
for a healthy back is just that - an old myth. If you are not
comfortable when sleeping because your mattress is too hard, sags, leans, or doesn’t
provide even support while conforming to your body shape, you need
a new mattress. Don’t neglect the foundation, either. A poor
foundation can damage your mattress and prevent a good mattress
from providing the consistent support you need to rest comfortably
on your bed. Also, make sure that your mattress is large enough
to give you a comfortable amount of space.
Light
Lighting, whether artificial or natural, is a very powerful cue
to the brain that it is time to wake up. Restful sleep requires
a dark environment. Outside lights or the early sunrise which seeps
through the windows, a brightly lit alarm clock or reflected light
from another room can all interfere with rest and should be minimized.
Noise
Sudden noises can disrupt sleep. Steady, low sounds like the sound
of a fan or an air conditioner are often soothing because they help
block out other noises.
Temperature
The ideal bedroom temperature is 60°-65° Fahrenheit or 16°-18°
Celsius, but this varies from person to person. An uncomfortable
temperature will cause you to spend valuable sleep time trying to
stay warm or cool instead of resting.
